“Life is a Mystery to Be Lived, Not a Problem to Be Solved.” — Søren Kierkegaard
Hunter Ward, EdD, LPC

Available for In-Person Sessions & Teletherapy

My approach is best defined as existential-integrative therapy (EIT), which combines the core principles of existential psychology with various therapeutic techniques and theoretical perspectives to create a unique process specific to each client. This holistic approach considers the individual’s physiological, psychological, emotional, social, and cultural factors, aiming for whole-person wellness. My approach is also supported by acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) and somatic therapy, which focus on mindfulness, acceptance and behavior-change strategies, and the mind-body connection.

Central to my process is an experiential and relational focus, which seeks to foster a safe and intimate space where clients can directly engage with their self-protective patterns and underlying wounds, rather than just talking about them. In our therapeutic work together, I will focus on what unfolds in the present moment. I’ll pay close attention to how you relate both to yourself and to me, gently reflecting back aspects of your experience that may be evident but unnoticed. I believe the meanings you’ve made from past experiences and life circumstances are carried into the present—some consciously, others less so—expressed through your body, voice, actions, values, and attitudes. Everything you express reveals something about your relationship with yourself, with others, and with the world. My intention is to attune closely to you and support you in becoming more present to your immediate experience, so you can more fully connect with what truly matters to you and, in doing so, bring new vitality to your life.

I deeply value working with people from all life experiences and with various life concerns. Specifically, I love embarking on this journey with those who feel they aren’t actually living and desire more from life, and aren’t reaching their full potential. This includes those that are stuck in their anxiety and trauma, have difficulty in experiencing fulfilling relationships with others, and struggle to understand who they are and their purpose in this world.

While many people begin therapy during a time of crisis, it’s often deeper, long-standing issues that truly bring them in. I aim to work efficiently, making each session count. Most clients aren’t expecting instant solutions, but they are typically experiencing real distress and looking for relief. As therapy continues, our focus often broadens—we move beyond just easing the pain to building something more fulfilling: stronger, more meaningful relationships, more creative and satisfying work, greater inner peace, and a deeper connection to life. Supporting others in reaching these goals is a key source of meaning in my own life.

While my approach incorporates a level of depth in working, it is not always necessary. With my focus on tailoring therapy to the client’s unique needs, I also assist individuals in developing skills to meet their current demands which include emotional regulation, executive functioning, relationship building strategies, and general life skills. My intention is to make the therapy process pragmatic, which offers practical and applicable ways to engage in a more meaningful life.

The therapeutic journey can be a challenging one, and it is natural to be nervous about what you will explore, uncover, and learn about yourself. However, the more one can experience oneself in therapy, the more one can connect with what deeply matters; it is precisely this connection that leads towards a meaningful life. If my message resonates with you, I encourage you to contact me with any other questions or to explore if we would be a good fit.

More About Hunter

Ever since I can remember, I have always been fascinated by the human experience. From a young age, it has been very easy for me to ponder on why things are the way they are, what the meaning of all of this is, while also experiencing phenomena deeply. These experiences have cultivated a sense of awe in life, specifically the beauty in its mystery and absurdity. Today, I feel myself pulled towards helping others experience this awe in life, grapple with its mystery, and cultivate their own sense of meaning.

I am a Texas native who grew up in a female dominant household with a single-mother. My childhood was centered around sports with the goal of becoming a professional athlete one day. While this goal did not work out, it led me to find my true passion in this life – helping others face their life and pursue their fullest potential. This journey started in pursuing a career in the exercise science field, working as a strength and conditioning coach. Over the 10 years of working in that field, it gave me the opportunity to understand the impact of the mind-body connection and the importance of whole-person wellness.

These experiences led me to want to pursue a career within clinical counseling and sports and performance psychology, so that I could better help those wanting to reach their full potential. I hold a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from Middle Tennessee State University, a Master of Science in Kinesiology with a specialization in Sports Psychology from A.T. Still University, a Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from University of Western States, and a Ed.D. Sports & Performance Psychology from University of Western States.

Outside the office, you can either find me doing some sort of physical activity or spending time with my loved ones. I also dedicate time to working with athletes and performers within the youth space, helping to build equity and opportunity for all young athletes, so that all communities have the capacity to create positive and empowering youth sports experiences.
