Therapist Support Circle
The heart and intention behind this group is simple: to create a safe, nonjudgmental space for therapists, by a therapist. This isn’t a consultation group or another form of supervision. Instead, it’s like when you have a really supportive call with your therapist friend who lives states away, and you feel like you finally talked to someone who truly gets the ins and outs of this work, who didn’t try to tell you what you could do, shift your focus back onto “serving the client,” or tell you another training or book you should buy.
This is the kind of group that I needed most fresh out of grad school and still years later as a fully licensed clinician. For those times when you wonder: What about me? What about when a client ghosts after months of building a strong relationship and I know what to do professionally, but personally it has me feeling mad? Where do I go to be seen in the difficult moments and not be offered a professional “solution” or overly bogged down with language like “countertransference” or “burnout” that leaves me feeling less than human?
I have found that all too often well-intended community spaces for therapists can become a source of anxiety or comparison. “Do they think I am a bad therapist? Should I already have known that? Why is that person getting so many more clients than me?” In this support group, nothing is off limits, and no one gets judged or derided. Sometimes there could be a topic: building a sustainable schedule, charging late fees, decompressing after work, etc.; most times the group is there to meet the needs of the moment. Every meeting goes beyond typical clinical speak into deeper emotional, spiritual, and existential levels that can make this work both a gift and uniquely difficult.
My promise as your leader is to always bring warmth, acceptance, and understanding to every meeting and to each of you. Whenever something feels hard or scary to share in a room of your colleagues, I will most likely be the first person to say, “me too.” I’ve felt absolutely blessed and in awe of this line of work ever since I started studying psychology in undergrad, and it has also been the most challenging, anxiety-ridden, and vulnerable thing I have done. Being a therapist is not for the faint of heart, and those of us who really are in it with our whole selves know it will push on every wound, pull on the deepest insecurities, and require us to level up to do Self-led work continually. I’d love to be here for you and provide a space where all of us feel accompanied, so we can keep doing good work in a way that feels deeply aligned and fulfilling.
